Agentic Commerce for Shopify

Your customers are starting to send AI agents to shop on their behalf. We get established Shopify stores fundamentally ready for them, so your brand has the best chance of being found and chosen. Alongside Shopify SEO, it is one of the two pillars an established store now stands on.

The customer no longer arrives first, their agent does, and it knows them better than any paid audience ever could. The brands that are ready will acquire the best customers they have ever had.

The agentic era

Agentic commerce is here and your store is already in it

In March 2026 Shopify switched on Agentic Storefronts for every eligible store. Products from millions of stores now surface inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Google’s AI experiences, and nothing was asked of the brand.

The channel is already moving revenue. In the first quarter of 2026, AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 8 times year on year, orders from AI-powered searches grew nearly 13 times, and new buyers arrived through AI channels at nearly twice the rate of other channels, per Shopify’s own reporting (shopify.com). Being in the channel is automatic, and being chosen is the work.

How agentic shopping works

Most clients tell us the same thing: they know agents are coming, and nobody has explained how the shopping works. The whole journey has three steps.

01

The customer asks their agent

In their own words and their own language. The agent already knows their sizes, their address, their budget, and what they liked last time, so the question it takes shopping is more precise than anything a search box has ever seen.

02

The agent reads your store

Through Shopify’s agentic channel it reads the store’s structured data in milliseconds: products, variants, prices, delivery, policies. It never sees your theme. It sees what your data says, and it takes that as the truth about your brand.

03

The customer buys from you

The recommendation appears in the conversation, the purchase completes, and the order lands in your Shopify admin like any other, marked with where the sale was made. Discovery moves into the conversation, and the customer and the relationship stay yours.

What agents read

One protocol now fronts every Shopify store

Agents read every Shopify store through UCP, the Universal Commerce Protocol. It is identical on every store, so the edge is in what it serves, and the scale of information an agent interprets through it in milliseconds means the get-to-know-you phase between an agent and a store is so short, but so deep.

Behind it, Shopify Catalog assembles what agents read from whatever is in your admin. What it cannot infer it leaves empty, and a store without that discipline is a supermarket with nothing over the aisles: the agent reads what is available, and if nothing is available it moves to the store next door.

This is what we build, so that when an agent arrives it gets exactly what it needs.

Agentic commerce FAQs

Agentic commerce is shopping done through AI agents: a customer’s agent searches, evaluates, shortlists, and increasingly completes the purchase on their behalf. The searching half is often called agentic search. Shopify switched the channel on for every eligible store in March 2026, so established brands are already in it. Whether an agent recommends you depends on what it can learn about your store in the moment it asks.

Agentic Storefronts, Shopify’s channel for surfacing products inside AI assistants: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google’s AI experiences among them. It is on by default for eligible stores, managed from the Shopify admin like any other sales channel, and fed by Shopify Catalog, the structured product data layer that agents read.

The Universal Commerce Protocol, Shopify’s standard interface for agents. One set of endpoints covers discovering a store, reading its products and policies, and completing a purchase, and it is identical on every Shopify store, which is why the data behind it is the differentiator: the protocol is the same everywhere, what it serves is not.

Yes. The purchase completes through your store and the order lands in your Shopify admin like any other, marked with the channel it came from. The discovery happens inside the AI conversation, and the customer, the payment, and the relationship stay with you.

It is built on it. For Google’s AI features, Google’s own documentation says no separate optimisation exists: the SEO is the work. Shopify’s agentic layer is different. It gives agents a direct, structured way to read a store, and aligning a store for that reading is its own discipline. The two services are designed to run in tandem, and the schema and entity work at the centre serves both.

No. The agent decides what it recommends. What we control is readiness: whether your store gives every agent that arrives the best possible information to act on. You measure the outcome with your own tools and your own team, and the Readiness Review shows you the starting point in writing.

Translation gets the words right. It doesn't get the substance right. An agent can only relay what a store contains, so if the sizing guide or half the product story lives on the English site alone, that's what's missing from the French store too. Equal translation matters, but equal completeness is what we've built longest, across brands trading in up to seven international markets, and it's what decides what an agent can say about your brand there.
